NY Trip: We Arrive

In a departure from our normal travel times, Ray took an extra day off, and we left on Wednesday afternoon (instead of after work in the evening). While we did still get stuck at the border in to Canada, this allowed us to arrive at our hotel earlier in the evening (although still past Maia's usual bedtime), before complete exhaustion and road fatigue had set in. Maia was able to get some energy out (read: jumping as a means of locomotion down the motel hallway, and some more jumping on the bed for good measure). Then, using the tools we learned earlier this summer, we set her up in front of the laptop to watch a bedtime DVD while she settled herself down. We were all down for the night by 10:30 pm, which worked out nicely! We arrived in town a bit after noon, and after partially unloading the car at Tara's, we headed over to the bank to see Nana Effie and go out for lunch at TGI Fridays with Tara, Aaron, Rachael and the 4 of us. Effie was scheduled to work both Thursday and Friday, but had been given the okay to take a nice long lunch when we arrived. While there, she got a call from the bank telling her they needed her to return immediately. It was a ruse, however, and they eventually told her that they were giving her Friday off.
After lunch, we returned to Tara's house to get settled into our digs for the weekend: their new camper, which was parked next to the garage. It worked out great.
Aunt Tara had lots of birthday gifts for Maia... and every one of them a load of girly fun!!
She also had keys, so clearly she needed to drive!
It was an extremely warm day, and the rest of the weekend was forecast to be cooler. I knew Maia would LOVE the opportunity to go swimming, so shortly before dinner-time, we headed over to Nana and Grandpa's to swim. Maia was delighted!
We practiced a few of the things we'd been taught in her swimming class at the YMCA last winter. I even (eventually) got her to go under (by dunking) twice and she did great!
Parker generally enjoyed the warmth of the day, but was having a moment, here.

After a few hours of swimming, we got out, dried off and had some hot dogs for dinner on the deck in the dark. When we returned to Tara's after bedtime, Maia and Parker both settled down and slept well through the night.
