Ah, Spring... and another doctor visit

Earlier this week, Maia's daycare called concerned about a little rash on her hands and face. She's been horribly congested all week, and with the runny nose and all the extra wiping... neither they nor I were surprised about the rash on the face. But the hands, that was interesting. So the daycare director looked for bumps on the feet or in the mouth, but didn't find any. And she wasn't running a temp, so they asked me to keep an eye on it.

We gave her some Benadryl before bed, and the rash looked a little better the next morning. Still no temp, no indication she didn't feel well. Nothing.

On Thursday morning, however... they called me at work. The blisters on her hands were starting to get much larger and puss-filled. They still weren't particularly worried (again, not acting sick), agreed she does wash her hands a LOT and her skin is soooo sensitive... but could I just take her into the doc to get her cleared?

So I call the pediatrician, and rather than offer me an appointment, they decide to consult with the doc and call me back. Doc isn't worried since there are no other signs of illness, but then that doesn't really help me because they can't really clear her to stay at daycare without seeing her. So I leave work (again) to go take her to the doctor... and have to pick her up from daycare during nap time. This could get interesting.

So she is non-stop talking through the pediatricians: "Hungee?" Maia, you just ate lunch. "Keen diaper?" Maia they just changed your diaper 5 minutes ago. "Watch fishies?" "Puter!" "Read book?" and on and on... She talked to the staff, she talked to the nurse. She weighed 23 lbs 1 oz fully clothed, by the way. She ran from one side of the room to the other: "Weady- Set- Gooooo!" She spun the doctor's stool around "Circo?", then put her sippy of water on it "Watoo a ride?"

As soon as Stephanie, the PA walked in: not a word. She generally does pretty well during her exams. Not as interested in having her mouth looked at this time (which may be related to those top two molars coming in). But the PA makes a quick diagnosis: Yep. Hand, foot and mouth disease (a.k.a. Coxsackie virus). Nothing that can be done for it. Although she's very fortunate and seems to have an extremely mild case: no sores in the mouth, no fever, blisters on hands and feet, but don't seem to be bothering her much. Can't even say to go back to daycare after she's fever free for 24 hours... so we have to wait and see. Probably Monday.

So Maia and I go home, get her down for a nap. When she wakes up, it's sooooo nice out, it feels like summer. She's been sweating, and so I get her into shorts and we head out, run some errands, and then come home and make some hot dogs on the grill for dinner while she plays outside. More time on her slide....

Jump up!
I love that I caught this pic while she is in the air. Oh, and the girls at daycare gave her antenna again. But check it out... they CURL! Then daddy gets home and starts making faces at Maia through the screen door. Which she gets closer to investigate...
... and finds hysterical!!
All-in-all, not a bad afternoon to be home with a "sick kid" enjoying a 75° day on April 1st!
